Welcoming the Year of the Horse: A Joyful Chinese New Year Celebration at SLK Makassar

The spirit of joy, tradition, and togetherness filled the campus of SLK Makassar as students, teachers, and staff gathered to celebrate the 2026 Chinese New Year Celebration on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The school hall was transformed into a vibrant festive space decorated with red lanterns and traditional Chinese ornaments, reflecting the rich cultural heritage behind the Lunar New Year. Carrying the theme “Welcome Spring, Success Comes Swiftly,” the event symbolized new beginnings, prosperity, and hope as the community welcomed the Year of the Horse.

From the moment students arrived at school, the festive atmosphere could already be felt. Many students proudly wore traditional Chinese attire such as cheongsam and tang suits, filling the school with bright shades of red and gold—colors that symbolize luck, happiness, and prosperity in Chinese culture. The celebration aimed not only to commemorate the Lunar New Year but also to provide students with meaningful cultural experiences that promote appreciation for diversity and global traditions.

The event officially began with an opening session led by student MCs, followed by a prayer and welcoming remarks. The lively celebration immediately started with a cheerful Grade 3 performance of the song “Xin Nian Hao,” a traditional Chinese New Year greeting song. Their enthusiastic singing and joyful expressions brought smiles to everyone in the audience and helped set a warm and festive tone for the day’s celebration.

Following the opening performance, the audience enjoyed an energetic dance performance by the ECA Dance group. Through graceful movements and vibrant choreography, the students showcased the festive spirit of Chinese New Year while demonstrating their confidence and teamwork. The performance highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing creativity and artistic expression among students.

One of the most highly anticipated highlights of the event was the Barongsai (lion dance) performance, a traditional cultural performance believed to bring good luck and prosperity. As the sound of drums echoed throughout the hall, the colorful lion dancers made their grand entrance. The lively movement of the lions captivated the audience as they danced energetically across the floor.

Students gathered excitedly around the performers, laughing and cheering as the lions playfully interacted with them. One of the most memorable moments occurred when students were invited to “feed” the lion, a symbolic act believed to bring good fortune. The interaction created an atmosphere of joy and excitement as children eagerly reached out to the lion dancers and posed for photographs. The lion dance performance not only entertained the audience but also introduced students to an important cultural tradition that has been passed down for generations.

After the energetic lion dance session, students transitioned back to their classrooms for a creative Chinese New Year craft activity. In this activity, students created Chinese New Year hanging decorations using colorful paper. The craft session allowed students to express their creativity while learning about traditional decorations commonly displayed during Lunar New Year celebrations. Working together with their classmates, students carefully assembled their decorations, transforming simple materials into beautiful festive ornaments.

Beyond fostering creativity, the activity also encouraged collaboration and hands-on learning. Through crafting, students were able to connect more deeply with the cultural meaning behind Chinese New Year traditions.

Later in the program, everyone gathered again for a poetry recital presented by Grade 6 students. The students confidently delivered a Chinese New Year themed poem, reflecting themes of renewal, hope, and good fortune for the year ahead. Their performance added a reflective and artistic dimension to the celebration, reminding everyone that festivals are not only about excitement but also about cultural storytelling and expression.

The celebration continued with one of the most engaging activities of the day: the Chinese New Year proverb game. In this activity, students worked in teams to arrange pieces of traditional Chinese New Year sayings into complete proverbs. Each class was divided into groups, creating a lively and competitive atmosphere as students collaborated to solve the puzzle as quickly and accurately as possible.

The game encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, as students had to carefully analyze the phrases and work together to assemble the correct proverb. Cheers and laughter filled the hall as teams raced against time, and the excitement grew as the fastest and most accurate teams were announced as winners.

Adding another joyful highlight to the celebration, Grade 5 students performed a Chinese New Year song, bringing the audience together through music and festive rhythm. Their performance once again filled the hall with positive energy and reminded everyone of the happiness and unity that celebrations can bring.

At the end of the program, the winners of the proverb game were announced, and prizes were distributed to recognize their teamwork and achievement. The celebration concluded with a group photo session, capturing memorable moments of the students who participated in the games and performances.

Beyond the performances and activities, the Chinese New Year celebration also served as an opportunity for students to learn about the values behind the festival—family, gratitude, harmony, and hope for a prosperous future. Through interactive activities, cultural performances, and collaborative games, students experienced how traditions can bring communities closer together.

Events like this reflect SLK Makassar’s commitment to providing holistic education—one that not only develops academic excellence but also nurtures cultural understanding, creativity, and social interaction. By celebrating important cultural festivals, the school helps students develop a broader perspective and appreciation for diversity in an increasingly interconnected world.

The 2026 Chinese New Year Celebration was truly a memorable experience for the entire SLK community. The laughter of students, the vibrant performances, and the spirit of togetherness created a joyful atmosphere that will remain in the hearts of everyone who participated.

As the celebration came to a close, the school community welcomed the new year with optimism and excitement. Just as the theme expressed—“Welcome Spring, Success Comes Swiftly”—the event symbolized a hopeful beginning for the year ahead, filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and success for every student at SLK Makassar.
