Celebrating the Spirit of Indonesia’s Independence

On Friday, 14 August 2026, the students, teachers, and staff of Sekolah Lentera Kasih (SLK) Makassar came together to celebrate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day. Dressed in the national colours of red and white, the school community filled the campus with enthusiasm, pride, and a strong sense of togetherness as we commemorated one of the most meaningful moments in our nation’s history.

This year’s celebration carried the theme “Honoring Our Heroes, Inspiring Our Future.” The theme invited students to look beyond the festivities and reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and determination of the people who fought for Indonesia’s independence. Their struggles remind us that the freedom enjoyed by today’s generation was built through extraordinary commitment and love for the nation.

The celebration began with a Flag Raising Ceremony, creating a respectful and meaningful atmosphere for the day. Standing together beneath the Red and White flag reminded students that independence is not simply a historical event to remember every August, but also a responsibility that each generation must continue to uphold through integrity, unity, hard work, and respect for others.

Throughout the campus, the colours red and white created a vibrant expression of national pride. Students participated enthusiastically in the programme while teachers guided them in understanding the deeper meaning behind the celebration. Through this experience, Independence Day became both a joyful school event and an opportunity for meaningful character education.

Bringing the Stories of Indonesian Heroes to Life

One of the special highlights of the celebration was the Indonesian Heroes Cosplay Competition. Students were encouraged to learn about figures who played important roles in Indonesia’s history and represent them through costumes, presentations, and performances. The activity transformed historical learning into an engaging experience that students could see, feel, and remember.

Students proudly appeared in costumes inspired by national heroes and historical figures, bringing the spirit of Indonesia’s struggle for independence onto the SLK stage. Through their appearances and presentations, they were able to explore the values represented by these heroes, including bravery, perseverance, leadership, patriotism, and willingness to serve others.

More than simply wearing a costume, the activity encouraged students to connect with the stories behind the people they represented. History becomes more meaningful when children understand that the names they encounter in books belonged to real individuals who faced difficult choices, made sacrifices, and contributed to building the Indonesia we know today.

By introducing history through creative experiences, SLK aims to help students develop not only knowledge of the past but also appreciation for the values that can guide their future. Our heroes may belong to another generation, but their courage, determination, and love for the country can continue to inspire young Indonesians today.

Traditional Games, Teamwork, and Joyful Competition

The celebration continued with a series of exciting traditional Independence Day games. Students enthusiastically participated in activities such as the Eating Crackers Competition, Tug of War, Team Mat Relay, and Bakiak Relay Race. These familiar games brought laughter, excitement, and friendly competition to the school grounds while preserving traditions that generations of Indonesians have enjoyed during Independence Day celebrations.

The Eating Crackers Competition was one of the most entertaining moments of the day. Students challenged themselves to finish crackers hanging from strings without using their hands, resulting in plenty of determination, laughter, and encouragement from their classmates. What appears to be a simple game became an opportunity to practise patience, concentration, and perseverance.

Team activities such as Tug of War, Team Mat Relay, and Bakiak Relay Race highlighted the importance of communication and cooperation. Success depended not only on individual strength or speed, but on students listening to one another, coordinating their movements, supporting teammates, and working toward a shared goal. Every challenge became a practical lesson in teamwork.

Winning was certainly exciting, but the greater purpose of the competitions was participation and togetherness. Students learned to celebrate success respectfully, accept results positively, encourage their friends, and enjoy the experience of competing as part of a community. In this way, the games reflected the same spirit of gotong royong that remains an important part of Indonesian culture.

Honoring the Past and Inspiring the Next Generation

At SLK, celebrating Independence Day is also an opportunity to help students understand their role as the next generation of Indonesia. The freedom inherited from previous generations gives young people opportunities to learn, dream, create, and contribute. With those opportunities also comes the responsibility to use their abilities for something meaningful.

The message “Honoring Our Heroes, Inspiring Our Future” reminds us that honouring our heroes does not stop with remembering their names. Students can continue their legacy through everyday actions—studying diligently, demonstrating honesty, respecting differences, helping others, caring for their community, and developing the courage to do what is right.

The joyful moments shared throughout the celebration strengthened the sense of unity within the SLK community. From the solemnity of the flag ceremony and the creativity of the heroes cosplay to the laughter of traditional games, every activity contributed to a celebration where students could experience patriotism in ways that were meaningful, memorable, and appropriate for their age.

As we commemorate the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, may our students continue to grow as young people who appreciate the sacrifices of those who came before them and confidently contribute to the future of our nation.
