Charity Day 2026: Love in Action, Small Hands, Big Hearts

On Friday, 10 April 2026, students and teachers of Sekolah Lentera Kasih (SLK) Makassar took learning beyond the classroom through Charity Day 2026, a meaningful service-learning programme held at Panti Asuhan Murni, Makassar.

Carrying the theme “Love in Action: Small Hands, Big Hearts,” the programme encouraged students to understand that kindness is not simply something we talk about—it is something we put into action.

Through worship, games, sharing, performances, donation handover, and fellowship, SLK students had the opportunity to meet new friends, listen to their stories, share moments of joy, and experience firsthand the value of caring for others.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Sekolah Lentera Kasih, we believe that meaningful education does not take place only inside the classroom. Students also need opportunities to experience values such as compassion, gratitude, empathy, generosity, and service in real-life situations.

Charity Day was therefore designed as a service-learning experience, connecting character education and Christian values with meaningful community engagement.

Rather than seeing charity simply as giving material things, students were encouraged to understand that serving others can also mean giving their time, attention, friendship, encouragement, and love.

The visit to Panti Asuhan Murni provided a valuable opportunity for our students to turn these values into action.

Beginning with Praise and Worship

The programme began with a joyful Praise and Worship Session, bringing together SLK students, teachers, and the children of Panti Asuhan Murni.

Voices filled the room as everyone worshipped together, creating an atmosphere of unity and gratitude. Although the students came from different backgrounds and experiences, worship provided a beautiful reminder that faith has the power to bring people together.

This opening session also helped establish the spirit of the entire programme—not merely as a visit, but as a time to build relationships, share joy, and celebrate God's love together.

Breaking the Ice and Building Connections

After worship, the atmosphere became even more lively through ice-breaking activities and fun games.

Students and children from the orphanage enthusiastically participated together, responding to instructions, laughing, interacting, and encouraging one another throughout the activities.

These simple moments played an important role in breaking down barriers and helping everyone feel comfortable with one another.

What began as a meeting between two groups gradually became a room filled with smiles, conversations, and shared experiences.

For our students, it was an important lesson that friendship can begin with something as simple as being willing to say hello, participate together, listen, and make someone else feel included.

Small Hands, Big Hearts: Student Sharing and Reflection

A meaningful part of Charity Day was the Student Sharing and Reflection Session.

SLK students were given the opportunity to share what they had learned from the experience and reflect on the meaning behind the theme “Small Hands, Big Hearts.”

For children, understanding compassion becomes much more meaningful when they are given opportunities to practise it.

Through this experience, students were encouraged to recognise that they do not have to wait until they are adults to make a difference. Even at a young age, they can show kindness, encourage others, share what they have, and contribute positively to their community.

Every act of kindness matters.

A friendly conversation matters.

Listening to someone matters.

Sharing with others matters.

And choosing to care matters.

These are small actions, but when they come from a sincere heart, their impact can be significant.

Sharing Talents and Celebrating Together

One of the most memorable moments of the programme was the performance from the children of Panti Asuhan Murni.

Students watched and listened as their new friends shared their talents, including a musical performance. The experience reminded everyone that every child has unique abilities, strengths, and gifts worth celebrating.

Rather than Charity Day being centred only on what SLK students could give, it became an opportunity for both communities to share with and learn from one another.

Our students were able to appreciate the talents, confidence, and enthusiasm of the children they met.

This mutual sharing made the programme more meaningful, transforming the visit from a one-way act of giving into an experience of genuine fellowship.

Giving with Gratitude

Another important part of the programme was the Donation Handover.

Through the generosity and participation of the SLK community, donations and useful items were presented to Panti Asuhan Murni.

The handover represented more than the items themselves. Behind every contribution was a message:

We care. We remember. We are grateful for what we have, and we are willing to share.

For students, witnessing and participating in this moment helped make the concept of generosity more tangible.

They learned that giving is not measured only by the size or value of something we offer. The heart and intention behind the act are equally important.

Giving becomes meaningful when it is accompanied by respect, humility, and genuine concern for others.

Fellowship That Created Meaningful Memories

The programme concluded with fellowship time, giving students, teachers, and children from Panti Asuhan Murni the opportunity to continue interacting in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.

Conversations, smiles, songs, games, and shared experiences became some of the most valuable parts of the day.

These moments reminded our students that service is not about seeing others as people who simply need help. It is about recognising the dignity of every person, building meaningful relationships, and discovering how much we can learn from one another.

By spending time together, students experienced a deeper understanding of community—one built on mutual respect, friendship, compassion, and love.

Character Education in Action

Charity Day 2026 reflected an important part of SLK's educational mission: developing students not only academically, but also socially, emotionally, spiritually, and morally.

Activities such as this help students develop essential character values, including:

• Empathy — learning to understand the feelings and experiences of others.

• Compassion — responding to others with kindness and care.

• Gratitude — appreciating the people and blessings present in their own lives.

• Generosity — learning to share without expecting something in return.

• Respect — recognising the dignity and value of every individual.

• Service — understanding that our abilities and resources can be used to bless others.

These values cannot be developed through textbooks alone. They become meaningful when students are given opportunities to practise them in authentic situations.

Charity Day allowed those lessons to come alive.

Love Is Most Meaningful When It Becomes Action

The theme “Love in Action: Small Hands, Big Hearts” beautifully captured the purpose of the programme.

Our students may still be young, but their ability to care, share, encourage, and serve is already powerful.

We hope this experience will remain with them long after Charity Day has ended—not simply as a memory of visiting an orphanage, but as a reminder that they have the ability and responsibility to bring kindness wherever they go.

At Sekolah Lentera Kasih, we want our students to grow into individuals who are knowledgeable and capable, but also compassionate and willing to serve.

Because education becomes truly meaningful when what students learn helps them become a blessing to others.
