1. Purposeful Learning Through a STEAM Lens
Sekolah Lentera Kasih Makassar conducted its STEAM Week & Open House 2025 as a structured learning initiative aimed at strengthening interdisciplinary understanding across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Anchored by the theme “Naturally STEAMed: Smart Solutions from Earth’s Gifts,” the programme emphasised the application of knowledge to authentic, real-world contexts using nature-inspired solutions.

The event was designed to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate inquiry skills, creativity, and conceptual understanding through carefully planned activities and exhibitions. Learning experiences were aligned with international curriculum expectations, encouraging students to make connections across subject areas while developing higher-order thinking skills.
As an Open House event, STEAM Week also enabled parents and visitors to observe the school’s learning culture in action. It offered insight into how enquiry-based pedagogy, active learning, and reflective practice are embedded within daily teaching and learning across year levels.
2. Scientific Inquiry and Applied Investigation
A central component of STEAM Week was the Science Fair, where students presented investigative projects based on scientific inquiry processes. Projects explored practical applications of science, including natural product development and experimental demonstrations, allowing students to translate theoretical knowledge into tangible outcomes.

Students demonstrated competence in formulating research questions, developing hypotheses, conducting investigations, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. Through structured presentations, they articulated their learning clearly and engaged in meaningful discussions with peers, teachers, and visitors, reflecting strong communication and reasoning skills.
These activities highlighted the school’s emphasis on experiential learning. By engaging with real materials and real problems, students developed scientific literacy, environmental awareness, and an appreciation for sustainability—key elements of contemporary science education.

3. Integration of the Arts Within STEAM
The Arts played an integral role in STEAM Week through student-led performances in drama, dance, and music. These performances provided platforms for students to express ideas creatively while developing confidence, collaboration, and stage presence.
Artistic presentations were purposefully integrated into the programme to reinforce the interdisciplinary nature of STEAM. Students explored storytelling, movement, rhythm, and performance as complementary ways of communicating ideas and understanding concepts beyond written or numerical forms.

STEAM Week also featured a range of structured activities, including the Fun Olympiad, Brain Blitz Showdown, Spelling Bee Competition, and Costume Parade. These activities were designed to challenge students cognitively while maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Through these experiences, students demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and perseverance. Competitive elements were framed as opportunities for growth, encouraging students to apply strategies, manage time effectively, and reflect on their learning processes.
The interactive nature of these events reinforced positive learning dispositions. Students were motivated to engage actively, take intellectual risks, and celebrate both effort and achievement, supporting the development of confidence and resilience.
5. Community Partnership and Educational Impact
STEAM Week & Open House strengthened collaboration between the school and its wider community. Parents and visitors actively engaged with student learning by attending presentations, observing performances, and interacting with exhibits, fostering shared understanding and partnership.

The event showcased the school’s commitment to student-centred learning, where learners take ownership of their work and articulate their thinking with clarity and confidence. Authentic assessment opportunities allowed students to demonstrate progress in both academic and personal development.
