1. A Day in the Newsroom Begins
On 9 May 2025, our enthusiastic Grade 3 students embarked on an inspiring field trip to Tribun Timur, one of Makassar’s most well-known media outlets. With excitement and curiosity lighting up their faces, the children stepped into the world of journalism to understand how news is gathered, processed, and shared with the public.
Students were warmly welcomed by the Tribun Timur team and given an overview of the company’s history and operations. The children learned about the roles of journalists, editors, photographers, and the many professionals who work together to produce a newspaper and manage online news platforms. They were amazed by the pace and collaboration required in a newsroom.
This introduction helped set the stage for a full day of learning experiences. The staff explained how digital and print journalism intersect and evolve, giving the children a glimpse into how modern newsrooms operate in the age of social media and 24/7 reporting.
2. Becoming Young News Anchors
One of the most exciting parts of the visit was when the students got the chance to become junior news anchors. Inside the studio, under professional lighting and in front of a green screen, the students practiced reading short scripts just like real TV reporters. Guided by a friendly news presenter, each child had their moment on camera.
They took turns sitting behind the news desk, learning how to maintain posture, speak clearly, and focus on the camera. With encouragement from their teachers and the Tribun staff, many students gained confidence and overcame their shyness on screen. Their excitement grew as they watched themselves appear with virtual backgrounds on the monitors.
This hands-on media experience allowed students to connect what they’ve learned in class about public speaking and communication to a real-world context. It was a memorable moment that many of them declared as their favorite part of the trip.

3. Behind the Scenes of a News Production
In addition to being in front of the camera, the students also explored what happens behind the scenes. They were introduced to the editing process, seeing how green screens are transformed into newsroom backgrounds, how footage is cut and stitched, and how graphics are added.
Watching the live feed turn into polished news segments on the screen fascinated the students. The production team explained how they use software tools to manage audio levels, insert transitions, and prepare the final clip for broadcast or upload. This part of the tour sparked interest among many students in technology and media production.
Through this behind-the-scenes look, students understood that the news industry is not only about reporting but also about technical precision and creative teamwork. It was an eye-opening moment for them to see how much work goes into every news story that reaches the public.

4. Meeting a Media Legend
During the field trip, the students had a special opportunity to meet a senior figure from Tribun Timur who warmly greeted them and shared stories of his experience in journalism. His cheerful demeanor and inspiring words left a lasting impression on the young audience.
He emphasized the importance of telling the truth, being curious, and always seeking to learn more. His passion for media and education resonated with both the students and the teachers, bridging generations through shared excitement for storytelling and learning.
The students showed their appreciation by presenting a token of gratitude on behalf of the school. The warm exchange was a highlight, symbolizing the value of community partnerships in education and the importance of learning beyond classroom walls.

5. Reflections and New Aspirations
Back in the conference room, the students reflected on their experiences by writing brief summaries and answering guided questions about what they learned. It was heartening to see them express newfound appreciation for news reporting, teamwork, and communication skills.
Many students shared their aspirations of becoming news anchors, reporters, or even video editors in the future. Some were intrigued by the technology they saw, while others were fascinated by the idea of sharing stories that could make a difference. Their reflections captured the essence of experiential learning—curiosity sparked into aspiration.
Before returning to school, the entire group gathered in the Tribun Timur lobby for a joyful group photo. Smiles, peace signs, and laughter filled the space, wrapping up an unforgettable field trip. The visit not only taught them about journalism but also about the power of stories and the people who tell them.
