Exploring the Sweet Side of Learning: SLK Makassar's Visit to the Sari Roti Factory

Field Trip for Grade 1 & 2 – 14 May 2025

1. A Journey into the World of Bread

On 14 May 2025, our Grade 1 and 2 students from Sekolah Lentera Kasih Makassar embarked on an exciting and flavorful learning journey to the Sari Roti Factory. With wide eyes and eager hearts, the children stepped into the world of one of Indonesia’s most beloved bread brands to learn how their favorite snacks are made.

Upon arrival, the students were greeted warmly by the Sari Roti team. After a brief orientation session, the children were guided into the facility where they could safely observe the different sections of the bread-making process through glass panels. From mixing and kneading to baking and packaging, every step was a new discovery.

This immersive experience gave students an opportunity to connect what they have learned in class—about factories, production lines, and hygiene—to real-world applications. It sparked not only curiosity but also appreciation for the effort and care behind every loaf of bread.

2. Clipboards, Curiosity, and Critical Thinking

As part of the field trip activity, each student brought along a custom-designed observation sheet on a clipboard. These sheets guided their exploration and encouraged them to take notes on what they saw, heard, and learned during the tour. It was a beautiful integration of literacy, science, and real-world application.

In groups, the students paused at various observation points, discussing with their peers and pointing out key components of the production line. Teachers and facilitators were seen supporting their thinking with guiding questions like “What do you think this machine does?” and “Why do they wear gloves and masks here?”

The learning atmosphere was highly engaging—students were not just passive viewers but active learners, interpreting what they saw, asking questions, and even drawing the machines they found most interesting. It was inquiry-based learning in action, beyond classroom walls.

3. Sweet Surprises and Kind Gestures

At the end of the factory tour, a delightful surprise awaited the children. Each student received a special snack pack from Sari Roti, complete with their favorite bread varieties. The children beamed with joy as they posed for photos while holding their goodie bags, some even giving a thumbs-up to show their appreciation.

Back in the seminar room, the students had a short sharing session with the Sari Roti team. They reflected on what they learned, asked more questions, and even shared what their favorite Sari Roti product was. It was heartwarming to see how confident and articulate the students became when speaking in front of others.

This small but meaningful gesture from the Sari Roti team helped the students understand the value of hospitality and generosity. More than just a tour, this moment became a lesson in kindness and gratitude.

4. A Team of Young Explorers

Throughout the field trip, one could see teamwork and friendship in full bloom. Students helped one another fill out their worksheets, waited patiently in line, and supported each other as they observed and explored. It was a true demonstration of positive behavior and school spirit.

Teachers and accompanying staff were also instrumental in fostering this positive environment. They guided, encouraged, and celebrated every little milestone, whether it was a good question asked or a detailed drawing made. The collaborative dynamic between students and teachers was inspiring to witness.

In group photos taken throughout the day, cheerful smiles and peace signs dominated the frame. The energy and joy reflected how learning can be fun and deeply meaningful when it involves hands-on experiences and genuine exploration.

5. Bringing the Experience Back to School

As the students returned to school, they brought more than just snack packs—they carried with them new knowledge, enhanced observation skills, and lasting memories. Many couldn't stop talking about the machines they saw, the cleanliness of the factory, or the taste of their favorite bread.

In the following week, the field trip became the theme of various learning activities. Students wrote thank-you letters, made posters illustrating the bread-making process, and even acted out their own bread factory in class role-play. These follow-up activities allowed students to consolidate their learning creatively.

This field trip to the Sari Roti Factory truly embodied our theme of “Learning Beyond the Classroom.” It was not just about bread—it was about discovery, engagement, and growth. We thank Sari Roti for their hospitality and look forward to more meaningful educational experiences like this in the future.
